Our practice accepts children as new clients. Our philosophy is that we would like to show the children and
parents how to maintain a healthy mouth. Therefore, we stress oral hygiene instruction and discuss how to best
achieve a clean mouth. We will do a complete exam at age 3. But we do advise that the child come in as young as
1 to show a parent how to look after the child's mouth. At the Initial Exam we will introduce the child to the
basic dental instruments: mouth mirror, explorer, air and water syringe. At that time we will clean the teeth
and give fluoride.
We give the child a stuffed teddy bear that they can take home as a reminder that they need to keep their teeth clean every day.
We also have a treasure box for subsequent visits.
We feel strongly that the adult (permanent) molars should receive pit and fissure sealants to protect them from decay; this procedure
should be done as soon as the tooth erupts fully. There is also a strong orthodontic component to the observation
of the child's development. Recommendations are made as early as age 5 or 6 to intercept and correct orthodontic
problems. This continues up to and including adult orthodontics.
Lastly, we recommend that all children who play sports where the mouth is at risk of being hit come in for a
custom-fitted mouthguard.
