For Special Needs Patients:
- Patients At Risk for Endocarditis
Patients that have valvular heart disease or have had rheumatic fever need to take antibiotics 1 hour
before their dental appointment. We will prescribe the necessary antibiotic to suit your needs.
- Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy
We ask that you make your appointment the week before you receive your immune suppresive drugs.
This should lower the risk of developing an infection after your dental treatment. We perform a thorough
oral cancer screen in the head and neck area for all our clients. If you have had cancer in the past,
it is a good idea to have a yearly head and neck cancer screen performed. There is a high incidence of
secondary cancers forming in this area due to the large blood supply the head receives.
- Diabetic Patients
Patients need to be seen every 3 months if their blood sugar levels are not under control. Oral
infections can make it difficult for you to maintain a proper insulin level. It is imperative that
you keep your gums and teeth as healthy as possible to help you control your diabetes.
- Kidney Problems
Patients who have had kidney failure will need special attention given to their oral health, and
should you have a shunt in place we will need to prescribe antibiotics before you undergo any dental
treatment. We will limit the use of fluoride in your case but this puts you more at risk of having
tooth decay.
- Patients in Wheelchairs
The office is designed with this type of patient in mind. Our doorways are able to allow access
to the operatories. We are on gound level with no stairs to impede access.
- Allergic Patients
We are sensitive to the environmentally allergic patient and will work with a naturopath to find
what dental materials your body can and cannot handle.
- The Anxious Patient
The practice uses oral sedation and nitrous oxide to help relieve the anxiety of patients who feel
they are unable to cope with dental procedures without the aid of medication.
