Current Technology
Here we have provided an explanation of some of the various technologies we use in our office. Click on each one to jump to the area on this page with the associated information or simply scroll down.

Intra Oral Camera

We use the intra oral camera to show the patient the conditions with which they present. It allows them to understand what work is necessary. We are able to copy the images onto DVDs along with a CAESY (Clinically Advanced Education SYstem) explanation of how to treat the conditions we have discovered. CAESY is the world's premier multimedia patient education program. With its rich content, dazzling graphics, and ease of use, CAESY has become dentistry's No. 1 source for interactive patient education. Click here to see their website.

Alpha Laser

Since 1997 the practice has had an Alpha Laser that we use to promote healing, to relieve muscular pain, to aid in healing at an extraction site, and to treat oral ulcers and temporomandibular joint pain. Since we have incorporated its use, the need for patients to take pain medication after treatment has been significantly reduced. The majority of patients report that there was no need for pain medication.

Kinetic Cavity Preparation

KCP stands for Kinetic Cavity Preparation (Drill-less Dentistry). This advanced technique involves the use of an instrument which uses kinetic energy in the form of minute particles of alpha alumina propelled by compressed air. The force of the compressed air cleans away the decay. With the added precision of the KCP, more of the natural tooth is left intact.

The KCP is extremely safe for both the patient and dental team. It utilizes particles of alpha alumina, an inert, biocompatible food grade substance long used in medicine and food. A patient would have to undergo 28 preparations to breathe in an amount of alpha alumina equal to one grain of table salt.

Radiographs (X-rays)

The reason that we take radiographs (X-Rays) is to look inside and between the teeth. This allows us to detect early decay which is not obvious to the eye until the decay is deep into the tooth and close to the nerve. Radiographs also allow the dentist to see the quality of the bone around the teeth. We look at the height of the bone under the gum and whether or not there is disease in the bone such as abscess or periodontal disease.

To have an examination without Radiographs taken is like walking into a dark room without turning on the lights. You see nothing without the lights and everything once they are on. The Doctor needs all the information he can gather to make an accurate diagnosis. We take a Full Mouth series of small specific X-Rays for new clients and in some cases supplement them with Radiographs called a Panogram and a Cephalogram.

The larger Radiograph called the Panogram shows the jaw joints, the sinus, and upper and lower jawbones. It is helpful in ruling out pathologies such as cancer, joint disease and impacted or missing teeth. The level of radation is very low.

A second type of large Radiograph is called the Cephalogram. It is used to determine the growth and development of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic diagnosis is made from the measurements from this type of survey.

Today's Radiographs are very safe. Doses of radiation are very small. In our office, the X-Ray units are tested at the beginning of each day. Yearly testing is done by an outside Dental company, as required by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and the government.

Sterilization

In our practice, we follow rigid sterilization procedures that meet the governing standards set by our industry. Following their use, all instruments are scrubbed and rinsed, put into an ultrasonic cleaner and rinsed, then put into a hot intense steam sterilizer called a Statim. We have two areas in the office which sterilize instruments - one for the hygiene and one for the restorative instruments. All handpieces (drills) are sterilized as well, following each use. Many items are disposable.

Rooms are cleaned between each client by wiping down the chairs, disinfecting the overhead lights, switches, trays, counter tops, X-ray heads, etc. Gloves, masks and safety glasses are used during your appointment.

Once a month, test strips are sent to an independent lab to verify the proper working of our sterilization equipment and to ensure that we are achieving positive results. Solutions are run through all water lines to clean out bacteria every day. We welcome people to visit our office and view our facility for reassurance prior to coming as a client.

YAG Laser

The practice has used a soft tissue surgical laser since 1989. It allows us to remove soft tissue without bleeding. The surgical site is painless during and after treatment. The laser can be used to remove overgrown gums as well as small and large growths that develop in the mouth. Over the years we have helped children that are tongue tied by surgically removing the frenum that ties the tongue to the floor of the mouth. We have been able to save teeth that have decayed well below the gum line by removing the gum that had grown into the cavity, which would have made restoring the teeth nearly impossible due to bleeding in the restorative site.

Diagnodent

The DIAGNOdent® is a laser that measures the amount of decay that is present in teeth. With this technology we are able to diagnose decay at its earliest stages and then be able to treat without the use of freezing the area. When the decay is at its early stage, the KCP can be used to remove the decay from the tooth. A white filling can then be placed.
